What is comprehensive car insurance?

Comprehensive car insurance is not compulsory. It is an optional car insurance that you can purchase through your choice of insurance provider for a premium that may be paid monthly or yearly.

It provides you with cover if your vehicle is damaged in an accident or is stolen, along with fire, theft, accident damage and malicious damage. It also provides cover for your legal liability for loss or damage to someone else’s property caused by a motor vehicle accident which is partly or fully your fault.

Optional policy extras may include excess free windscreen cover or hire car in the event of an accident. These optional extras will be different between insurance providers, so it's important to read the PDS before selecting the cover.

What you need before you purchase comprehensive car insurance

Before you purchase comprehensive car insurance, you’ll need to ensure that:

  1. Your vehicle is appropriately registered with your relevant state or territory; and
  2. You have purchased compulsory third party (CTP) insurance. CTP is mandatory for all vehicles in every state and territory. In most states and territories, CTP is included as part of your vehicle’s registration costs. CTP provides you with cover for compensation claims made against you by people who have been injured in a car accident determined to be your fault.

It also pays to consider the value of your car and whether you have any additional accessories or after market modifications that you will need to disclose to your insurer.
