The South Burnett Aquatic Centre in Nanango has taken a major step forward in accessibility, officially unveiling its brand-new Poolpod at a community celebration on 8 December.
Mayor Kathy Duff, Councillors, and representatives from Heritage Nanango Community Branch gathered to cut the ribbon on the innovative lift system and see the Poolpod in action.
The installation was made possible thanks to more than $115,000 in grant funding from Heritage Nanango Community Branch and joint venture partner Heritage Nanango Community Funding Ltd (HNCF). The Poolpod was fitted to the Centre’s 25-metre indoor heated pool earlier this year and is already set to transform the way many residents experience the water.
Developed in Glasgow, Scotland, the Poolpod is a game-changer for people with mobility challenges – providing a safe, dignified, and independent way to enter and exit the pool. It can be used standing, seated, or with a compatible wheelchair, and is spacious enough for two users at once. Parents with young children and anyone who finds pool steps difficult will also benefit from the smooth, gliding lift that gently lowers swimmers into the water.
HNCF Director Jane Hodgkinson said Heritage Nanango was proud to help deliver a project that will have such a meaningful and long-lasting impact.
“Along with providing local banking services, our goal is to support projects and initiatives that truly benefit our community.”
“HNCF is thrilled to join with South Burnett Regional Council to support the installation of the Poolpod, knowing it will open the door for more people to enjoy the health, social and wellbeing benefits of the aquatic centre,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
Cr Jane Erkens said the partnership demonstrated the strength and community spirit in Nanango.
“While Council often partners with various organisations to apply for grants, this project was different. It was a direct collaboration with the Heritage Community Bank, and the result is something we can all be proud of,” said Cr Erkens.
“This new equipment will allow people to enjoy the pool with comfort, safety, and dignity — ensuring that everyone in our community has the opportunity to participate fully and equally.”
The community is encouraged to visit the South Burnett Aquatic Centre to see the Poolpod in operation and experience firsthand how it is helping make Nanango’s facilities more accessible for all.
