Story Dogs

Story Dogs is a literacy charity in Australia, with the vision of making reading fun for children. We sponsor several Story Dog teams in Queensland, who volunteer their time to provide supportive reading sessions to Grade 2 Students. Our Sponsorship provides funding towards assessment, accreditation, training and supplies for the Story Dog teams.

Why is Story Dogs important?

Instead of reading to a big class, children are encouraged to read to a companion dog. Animals are ideal reading companions because they promote relaxation and lower blood pressure, do not judge, laugh or criticise and allow children to proceed at their own pace. Reading sessions take place in a quiet area of the school grounds, such as the library or outside the classroom. A reading session is approximately 20 minutes long, where each child is one-on-one with the dog team. Books are chosen to suit the studentĀ“s reading level.
