Starting Out

Welcome to the next stage of your life. We put People first even when you're young and inexperienced because that's often when you need our help the most. Heritage can help you get a solid start to the financial side of life - helping you to reach your goals while having fun along the way.

Starting work

Leaving school, university or TAFE and starting full-time work is an exciting part of life. It may be the first time in your life you have a lot of cash to splash! But it's also a time you may have new expenses such as car loans and rent.

Without sounding like a killjoy, now's the time to lay down some solid financial groundwork. Set yourself up for the future while still having plenty of fun and freedom.

Manage your money

Heritage puts People first and the first piece of advice we usually give is to make a budget and stick to it. It's a great habit to get into and use for the rest of your life.

You're making more money now. And while you should enjoy and reward yourself with some new clothes, a car or a holiday, you also have new responsibilities. Avoid getting into debt and pay off any student loans as fast as you can.

Budgets are flexible and evolve as your financial situation changes. But a good budget is the backbone of a healthy financial life.

Heritage has a wide range of accounts with no monthly account or transaction fees on everyday accounts (though service fees may apply), a low interest rate credit card, and a personal loan. These can all help you save money.

How to avoid paying fees

Why pay fees you don't have to? Here are simple tips that will help you avoid these nasty little expenses:

  • Set up direct debits to come out the day after you get paid, so there's always enough money in your account to cover your payments
  • Get a Visa Debit card. With a Visa Debit card, you can avoid paying EFTPOS fees. Whenever you make a purchase simply press the "credit" button instead of "cheque" or "savings" and the purchase will be free of Heritage transaction fees1
  • Use Heritage ATMs. Personal customers can use Heritage ATM's to withdraw cash at no cost. If you use other ATMs you may be charged a fee
  • Limit using non-Heritage ATMs
  • By withdrawing cash when you use EFTPOS, you could save yourself non-Heritage ATM fees
  • Choose the right account for your needs. For example, don't keep your savings in an everyday account, and consider putting larger balances into a high interest account
  • Arrange access to Heritage internet banking, telephone banking and SMS Enquiries. These services are free to personal banking customers

1At some merchants, purchases using your Visa Debit card can only be made by pressing the "cheque" or "savings" button, which in this case may attract a transaction fee. Purchases in overseas currency will attract an overseas currency conversion service fee on AUD amount.
